Mother’s Day – 12th May 2019

Mother’s Day originated in the United States by Ann Jarvis who had been a peace activist and nursed wounded soldiers during the Civil war and created Mother’s day work clubs to address public health issues. Her daughter Anna Marie Jarvis wanted to continue her mother’s work and pushed to have a day to honour all mothers and celebrate the sacrifices mothers made for their children. In 1914 Mother’s US president Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day.

Mothers day was introduced in Australia in 1924 by a Sydney woman Janet Heydan as she was concerned for the lonely and the forgotten after the World War 1 after visiting her friend daily in hospital.

To celebrate Mother’s Day people express their love and appreciation for their Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunties, Step Mums, Mother In laws and Mother-figure by showering them with flowers, gifts and cards and breakfast in bed.

My favourite day in the floristry calendar is Mother’s Day.

Not long after I began my floristry journey I became a mother and floristry has blessed me to stay home with my children and continue my work as a florist. Being a mother is the most important job in the world and I know how hard it is to juggle housework, work, cooking, homework, sporting activities whilst showing love and support to your children. Creating beautiful flower arrangements for other mothers in our community is an honour and a day I look forward to every year.

Mums love to receive anything handmade, hand written and flowers.
